10th of Tevet Fast, this year will be on Tuesday, January 6, 2009. A Fast Day to remember the day when the Babylonians first laid siege to Jerusalem 2,500 years ago, beginning a long line of disasters for the Jewish people.

Weekly Parasha


Bereishit
The Torah portion Bereishit reads on the first Shabbath after Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot). The beginning of Bereishit also reads in Simchat Torah holiday right after completing reading the Torah in V'Zot HaBerachah which is the last Weekly Torah portion in the Torah.

Noach
The first part of the portion deals with the Great Flood God brings on the world because of mans sins and robbing each other. Noah was in his generations a man righteous and whole-hearted who chose by God to survive the flood.

Lech-Lecha
Torah portion Lech-Lecha is the third Weekly Torah portion in Genesis book. She starts in chapter 12 verse 1 and ends in chapter 17 verse 27. The portion deals with the description of Abraham first part life. Abraham, who called on that time Abram, directed by God to go to Canaan with Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son.

Vayeira
The portion opens with Abraham’s three visitors. Three angels came to Abraham’s house and told him that Sarah would have a son, but Sarah laughed to herself at the prospect, with Abraham so old. “And Sarah laughed within herself, saying: 'After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also”.

Chayei Sarah
The main point of Chayei Sarah is the description of Abraham sending his slave to look for a woman for his son Yitzchak. Abraham doesent want take a wife for Yitzchak from the Canaanites and direct his senior servant go to Abraham’s family in Mesopotamia (Aram Naharayem).

Toledot
After long period of barrenness, Rebecca got pregnant. As the twins struggled in her womb, she inquired of God, who answered her that two separate nations were in her womb: “And the LORD said unto her: Two nations are in thy womb, and two peoples shall be separated from thy bowels”.

Vayetze
Torah portion Vayetzeis is the seventh Weekly Torah portion in Genesis book. She starts in chapter 28 verse 10 and ends in chapter 22 verse 3. The portion tells Jacob’s events in Haran, since the day he left the land of Israel till the day he coming back. The portion has been written sequentially from her beginning to the end without any scissions.

Vayishlach
Torah portion Vayishlach is the eighth Weekly Torah portion in Genesis book. She starts in chapter 34 verse 4 and ends in chapter 36 verse 43. Portion main part describe Jacob’s continues events when he coming back to the land of Israel. The end of the portion deals with Esau’s annals, offspring, the place he use to live and his rulership.

Vayeshev
Vayeshev portion comprise the beginning of Joseph and his brothers anthology stories, the last part of Jacob’s annals family and the last part of Genesis in general. Each chapter in this portion contains an independent story with different characters and geographic locations.

Miketz
The portion continues describing Joseph and his brothers story. While joseph spends time in jail, Pharaoh dreams two bothering dreams: in the first one, 7 thin cows and 7 fat cows came up out of the river, and then the 7 thin cows ate the seven fat cows. In the second, seven good ears came up on one stalk, and then seven thin ears sprung up after them and swallowed the good ears.

Vayigash
The previous portion ended with Jacob’s demand to keep Benjamin after he was accused for stealing Joseph’s silver cup. Yehuda offered that all the brothers remain as Joseph’s servants, but Joseph allowed the others to leave to Canaan and to keep only Benjamin with him.

Vayechi
Jacob and his family live in Egypt another 17 years after Joseph and his brothers union. Towards the end of Jacob life, he calls to Joseph and swear him not to bury him in Egypt, but only in the land of Israel. Afterwards he blesses Joseph’s sons, Menashe and Efraim and determinant that they will be belong to the Israel tribes like Reuben and Shimon.
